Colombia & Nicaragua | Signature Blend
Rich, smooth and made with a nod to the history behind our name, 1571 brings together carefully selected Colombian and Nicaraguan speciality coffees in a beautifully balanced blend of chocolate, caramel and gentle fruit sweetness.
The Colombian component provides rich sweetness, smooth body and the chocolate and caramel character at the heart of the blend. Nicaraguan coffee adds balance, clarity and a subtle fruitiness that lifts the cup without taking it away from its comforting foundations.
The individual coffees within the blend can change as harvests move through the year, allowing us to select coffees that are tasting at their best while maintaining the character we want from 1571.
In the cup, expect chocolate and caramel sweetness, a smooth, creamy body and a gentle layer of fruit underneath. It's rich enough for espresso, beautifully balanced through milk and equally comfortable with slower brewing methods.
But there's another reason this particular blend carries the name 1571.
Why 1571?
The story takes us back more than 450 years.
In 1571, the English Parliament passed legislation requiring most men and boys over the age of six to wear woollen caps made in England on Sundays and holy days, with certain groups exempt. The measure was designed to support England's domestic cap-making industry.
The law itself didn't create the modern flat cap, but the tradition of practical woollen caps endured. In the centuries that followed, the flat cap became particularly associated with Britain's working communities and developed into one of the country's most recognisable pieces of everyday clothing.
When we created 1571, we wanted to give a little nod to that history – and to the humble cap that eventually gave Flat Cap Coffee its name.
So this is more than another blend in the range.
It's our coffee tribute to the story behind the cap.
