Central Kenya | Washed | Peaberry
A true gift from Kenya – “Zawadi” means “gift” in Kiswahili, a fitting name for this distinctive peaberry coffee with rich sweetness, beautiful clarity and a wonderfully smooth finish.
Zawadi is created from carefully selected peaberries grown in Kenya's celebrated central coffee-growing highlands, primarily from coffees processed at the Kamandi and Ndia-ini factories.
Ndia-ini lies close to Mukurwe-ini, where fresh water from the Gikira River is used during processing, while Kamandi sits among the lush highlands for which Kenyan coffee has become internationally renowned.
But what makes a peaberry different?
Most coffee cherries develop two seeds, which grow against one another and create the familiar coffee bean with one rounded side and one flatter side. Occasionally, however, a cherry develops only one seed.
That single seed grows into a smaller, rounder bean known as a peaberry.
Peaberries are separated from conventionally shaped beans during sorting, allowing them to be selected and roasted independently. Zawadi brings these carefully selected peaberries together to create its distinctive Kenyan profile.
After harvesting, ripe cherries are pulped and fermented before the coffee is thoroughly washed. It then undergoes a secondary soak of approximately 24 hours, a technique associated with traditional Kenyan washed processing that helps produce exceptional cleanliness and clarity in the finished coffee.
The coffee is then carefully dried before the peaberries are graded and prepared for export.
In the cup, our Zawadi is beautifully balanced. Expect rich chocolate and raisin, accompanied by natural fruit sweetness and a clean, smooth finish. There's enough brightness to retain its Kenyan character, but plenty of body and sweetness underneath.
It's a wonderful example of what makes Kenyan coffee so distinctive – precise, expressive and full of character, while remaining beautifully balanced.

Recommended Brew Methods
V60 / Pour Over ★★★★★
A beautiful way to experience Zawadi's clarity. Pour over produces a clean, expressive cup that allows the fruit character and raisin sweetness to sit alongside its chocolate depth.
AeroPress ★★★★★
A fantastic balance of clarity and body, bringing out plenty of sweetness while retaining the coffee's distinctive Kenyan character.
Cafetière ★★★★☆
A fuller and rounder interpretation, emphasising the chocolate and raisin qualities and producing a softer, richer cup.
Espresso ★★★★☆
A characterful espresso with plenty of sweetness and fruit. Expect more brightness than our traditional espresso-led coffees, balanced by chocolate depth.
Flat White / Cappuccino / Latte ★★★☆☆
It can make a delicious milk drink, but we'd choose a brewing method that lets the clarity and distinctive character of the peaberry take centre stage.
