Haru Washing Station | Yirgacheffe | Washed | 87.5 SCA

From the legendary coffee-growing region of Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, Haru is an exceptionally elegant washed coffee with a wonderfully bright, fruit-led cup.

Haru is no ordinary washing station. Established in 1979, it forms part of Ethiopia’s modern speciality-coffee history, being among the early washing stations that helped introduce high-quality washed Ethiopian coffee to the wider world. Today, the station is owned by Komilachu and works with coffee grown by smallholder farmers in the surrounding highlands.

Coffee here grows at remarkable elevations. This particular Haru lot is listed by DRWakefield at 1,995–2,020 metres above sea level, where the cooler conditions allow the cherries to develop slowly, contributing to the complexity and clarity for which Yirgacheffe coffees are renowned. The lot combines Dega, 74-112, Kudhume and Wolisho varieties.

After harvest, the cherries are carefully hand-sorted before being pulped and fermented. At Haru, even the pH and TDS of the processing water are monitored to help control fermentation. The coffee is then washed in clean running water and slowly dried on raised beds before being prepared for export in Addis Ababa.

The result is a beautifully clean and expressive coffee. Expect ripe strawberry sweetness and creamy vanilla, lifted by a sparkling lime acidity, with delicate floral and berry characteristics appearing as the cup cools.

At 87.5 SCA, this is a coffee to take your time over.

Recommended Brew Methods

V60 / Pour Over ★★★★★
This would be our number one choice. It really showcases the clarity of the washed process, bringing forward strawberry, florals and that bright lime character.

Chemex ★★★★★
Another superb option if you want a particularly clean, delicate cup with plenty of aromatic character.

AeroPress ★★★★☆
A lovely choice if you’re wanting a little more body and sweetness while retaining the fruit and acidity.

Cafetière ★★★☆☆
It’ll certainly make good coffee, but the heavier mouthfeel won’t show Haru’s clarity quite as beautifully as a paper-filtered method.

Espresso ★★★☆☆
It can make a fascinating modern espresso,
particularly if you enjoy bright, fruit-forward shots but we wouldn’t make espresso our first recommendation for this coffee.

Our pick: V60 / Pour Over
Brew this one gently and let it cool slightly in the cup, that’s when its strawberry, floral and citrus character should really begin to open up.

We always recommend buying whole bean coffee as this is the best for freshness. We are however happy to grind our coffee to your specification if this is how you would prefer it. Please note, we only supply ground coffee in 227g and 500g bags.

As a small independent roastery, we occasionally adjust prices to reflect rising costs and to continue roasting responsibly. Existing subscriptions are unaffected.Â
